Clamecy to Villiers-sur-Yonne

Tuesday 22nd April
Clamecy to Villiers-sur-Yonne
4 locks and 7Km - 2 hours

We spent a great week at Clamecy, most of the time good weather, the past few days it changed to be cloudy and we had some rain Sunday night.  We thought it might be busy in Clamecy over Easter but it was pleasantly quiet, the port got a bit busier on Easter Sunday with hire boats.

We explored Clamecy over the days we stayed there, its a sleepy old town

We found a lovely park, we'd not found last year

One of the busier days in port

Saturday there is a market and the town comes to life, we even saw traffic jams

A lovely old market, with a beautiful roof

We bought ourselves a cooked chicken from the market, delicious

John and Jean on ‘Le Koala’ arrived on Saturday.  Le Koala is another Piper barge, it was built last year, in March they were briefly moored at Caversham on The Thames and then they came over to France pretty soon after.  We were expecting to see them; they were also wintered in Auxerre and arrived from Australia a few weeks after us.  We got to know them mainly via email, so it was great to get to know them better over a few beers/glasses of wine.

Today we left Clamecy just after 9am and we had a lovely trip to Vlliers-sur-Yonne.  4 locks, all ready for us, no waiting, with friendly, helpful lock keepers.  When we were moored in Clamecywe went for a cycle ride along the canal and we decided Villiers would be nice place to stop. When we arrived here today there was a hire boat moored up, but there was plenty of space for us.  We went off for a bike ride to Dornecy, a recommended place to visit by our canal guide.  It was a short 3km ride; the village was lovely, very old, no new houses, a couple of old washhouses, old gates into the town, and pretty streams running through the village.

When we returned from our bike ride, the hire boat had gone, so at the moment we have the mooring to ourselves.  We are now sitting on the back deck, Kev is fishing (for our supper) and once I have finished the blog I am going to read my book in the sun.

Leaving Clamecy this morning in the sunshine,
we enjoyed our stay, everyone is very friendly

Le Koala had gone off food shopping,
they were planning to leave Clamecy today and follow in our direction
