Damery to Chateau Thierry

Saturday 10th August

We stayed at Damery for another night, we really like the place, we have free electric and water, which we think is amazing.  We’ve had everything you can think of charging, dishwashing, washing machine, dryer etc etc!

We have had two different boats moored alongside us, neither asked permission first!  There is only space for two boats on the pontoon so you can understand it really.

Last evening we went for a walk around the small town, there are so many Champagne producers.  We went to see where the petrol station was, it was about ½ km away, we found it and Kev planned to go in this morning to pick up some diesel in his 2 x 20 litre containers on a small trolley. This morning he was off to buy his fuel and he was back about 30 mins later, no fuel, the fuel station closed for their summer holiday!!  It will teach us to go right up to the fuel station next time and read any notices they have about opening times/closures. To make up for it he came across a champagne house that was actually open (everywhere seemed shut due to holidays) so we went back and had a champagne tasting and bought a few bottles for the boat, they trolley got its first proper outing.  We asked them to recommend a restaurant….they said NOT to go to the one by river…which is the one we went to on Thursday evening!  We went for lunch to the one they suggested over the bridge and it was great, very traditional, lots of local French eating there.

We had a quiet evening on the boat planning our next few days.

Sunday 11th August

Early-ish start down river we covered about 45km 4 locks to Chateau Thierry a largish fortified town.  We had a wonderful trip, beautiful river, really fantastic; we are so pleased we decided to make it to Paris via The Marne.  A must do trip.  Vineyards everywhere, my photos have not done the views justice.  We found a mooring easily at Chateau Thierry, lots of space.  We even found a restaurant open to have lunch even though it was after 2pm when we got here.

We sampled about 5 different Champagnes, problem was we liked them all!

A good use for our trolley

This was a young english couple rowing their boat from near Belgium to Paris
They shared the lock with us

Luckily its down stream to Paris
They are now moored up behind us at Chateau Thierry
