Damery - Cycle ride to Epernay

Friday 9th August

We had a fun meal last night at Damery.  I was hoping we could find a restaurant to eat in, the one across the bridge wasn’t open until the weekend.  There was a small riverside restaurant we can see from our mooring that looked closed, so Kev wandered up there mid evening to come back to tell me the was an elderly couple sitting eating their meal and when he asked if they were open, they said “Oui” and that they could give us Poulet (chicken) and frites!  So off we went and we were the only people there, and they provided us a meal, not chicken but we think pork!  The restaurant was outside, a little way from the house.  At one point during our meal, the lady suddenly appeared by our table on a mobility scooter, (a bit like the Benedorm sitcom), she could walk perfectly well but the way she zoomed in and parked it… it just got our sense of humour….We got the giggles…. the fact you know you shouldn’t laugh makes it worse, so we couldn’t look each other in the eye or we’d set each other off again. Our table also was on wheels, so whenever we leant on it or tried to cut into our meat the table slid away from us!  It was a lovely evening, very memorable, and the food wasn’t too bad either!

A french meal we will never forget!

Today we got on our bikes and cycled to Epernay, around 6 miles, mainly on a busy road, so not much fun but we were really pleased we went as Epernay is the Champagne Capital.  Its a great place to visit, we visited the tourist office where they were giving free tastings from two local champagne producers and then we went to Moet & Chandon and did the touristy bit and we learnt all about Moet & Chandon and how Champagne is made.  It was really interesting. They have 28km of cellars where they store the bottles; we went on a tour of some of the tunnels, it was amazing.

We are going to stay here tomorrow as well as we think as it’s the weekend it’s a good idea to keep this good mooring, plus we like the place.
