Canal de Bourgogne - Dijon/Velars-sur-Ouch/Fleury-sur-Ouche/Moulin Banet/La Bussiere/Pont d'Ouche

Tuesday 9th August
Dijon to Velars-sur-Ouche
9 locks 10km 4 hours

Velars-sur-Ouche
the mooring is just before ecluse 45 right next to a supermarket and 2 boulangeries -
one was closed for their annual holidays
the other was closed Weds morning, so no croissants for breakfast!

The canal follows the valley of the river Ouche.  It’s a very pretty canal, with gentle meanders through a region of France that is sometimes called Burgundian Switzerland.  Velars is a great place to moor because you are just by a supermarket and a fuel station.  So Kev did a couple of trips with is 2 x 20 litre fuel canisters and filled Rangali up.

Wednesday 10th August
Velars-sur-Ouche to Fleury-sur-Ouche
4 locks 5km 1½ hours

Mooring at Fleury-sur-Ouche
Mornings are starting to get chilly and misty
Lots of dew on Rangali's roof which is great for helping to clean it

We had a very easy trip to Fleury.  We noticed a very nice restaurant near our mooring, and I looked it up on Trip Advisor and there were some great comments about it so we thought we might try and book it……..it was closed due to its annual holidays!

this looked a great little restaurant, shame it was closed until Thursday
They have a website which mentions their holiday
so its worth looking at it if you are planning to moor here in August

Thursday 11th August
Fleury-sur-Ouche to Moulin-Banet lock 34
7 locks 12km 2 hours

Another easy trip, the lock keepers are great on this canal, bombing along on their mopeds, working really efficiently.  We had been told about a great little bar/restaurant that was here at the lock run by a swiss couple.  We arrived in good time ust before 12 noon, I was really looking forward to lunch there…….they were closed!  Closed Tuesdays/Wednsdays/Thursdays, we are not having much luck.  It is a lovely mooring though with electric and water.

A lovely mooring
Restaurant at our mooring Closed!  Debs was not happy!

We filled up with water, you pay for how much you use, they have a meter
we took on just over 500 litres-60 cents a litre

Kev used ALL his lengths of hose, all joined together

Friday 22nd August
Moulin-Banet to La Bussière-sur-Ouche
8 locks 9km 2½ hours

We are enjoying our short days of travel, and we were moored at La Bussiere by 11.30.  I had read about a very nice hotel called Abbaye de la Bussière that has a Michelin starred restaurant, so after our recent disappointments of restaurants being closed, I rang and booked lunch in their bistro.  We showered and dressed in smart causal gear and walked the short distance to the hotel.  We had an amazing lunch, and excluding wine and aperitifs the bill was just under 100 euros, which we thought for the quality of the food, service and stunning surroundings was not bad.  The experience was faultless and we will certainly be going back there, maybe even to stay at the hotel when we come back in the winter to check on Rangali.

The moorings at La Bussiere, are situated just after the lock, and they were perfect, they looked new.  We have hardly seen any boats on the canal, just a few hotel boats and a few cruisers, no hire boats.  The scenery is beautiful.

We were the only boat moored here at La Bussiere, just after lock 26

Sculptures by Paul Day

Perfect setting for our lunch at the Bistro
Kev thought he had miraculously started to understand french menus,
until he realised they had given us one written in english!

Coffee in comfy chairs

A large version of this sculpture by Paul Day is at St Pancreas Station
The sculpture is of himself and his french wife Catherine
(they live in Dijon)

Beautiful public rooms

The park land is so peaceful with ponies grazing, a kingfisher flew over the lake,
a family of Koiypu feeding on the grass, a perfect idyl, we will return!

Saturday 23rd August
La Bussière to Pont d’Ouche
6 locks 7km 2 hours

We had the pleasure of the same lady lock keeper looking after us that we had yesterday; she was so friendly and smiley, working with 1 or 2 other student lock keepers.  They looked after us really well.  The locks are very easy, all around 2.6m deep, with well-spaced bollards and gentle filling.

We arrived at Pont d’Ouche port around 11am, and the lady who looks after the port, Sonia, was there to show us where to moor.  The lock keepers told her we were planning to stop there so she knew we were coming.  There are floating pontoons for the smaller boats, we are moored along a quay very near to the bistro that Sonia owns.  She told us that the port is very popular for winter moorings as it is great value.  We had lunch at her bistro, we had pizza which was homemade and excellent.  One thing to note is she doesn’t take credit cards, luckily we had enough cash on us.

We have had the locks to ourselves since Dijon but tomorrow we will be sharing the locks with the cruiser we shared with when we arrived at Dijon.  We worked very well together, so we don’t mind.

A bit of a grey day today, our mooring at Pont d'Ouche is great, lots of space,
we have electric, water if we needed it.  Great bistro, with the perfect host Sonia

Sonia who owns the bistro and and port.  A very friendly lady, and a great cook!
