St Ledger to Cercy/ Cercy to Anizy Lock/ Anizy to Chatillon-en-Bazois

Tuesday 10th September
Nivernais Canal
St Ledger-des-Vignes to Cercy-la-Tour
14km 3 locks

We bought a gas cylinder for the BBQ from the Carrefour and some extra provisions before setting off at 10.30am
The Nivernais Canal is very pretty, quite narrow in places, especially at the bridges, and some of the bridges are quite low too.  We were only going around 1km per 10 mins and we even struggled to overtake a couple of walkers!!  They were walking quite briskly. We did overtake them in the end but as we arrived at Cercy-la-tour we had to go under low bridge and through a narrow section, which was a barrage lock, and by then the walkers had caught us up.

Cercy is a great mooring, with lovely new pontoon, with free water and electric, although the electric keeps tripping off with the washing machine.  It a pretty town, not much here, but there is a boulangerie for tomorrow so thats good.  (There is a butchers too.)

In the evening just as we were going to bed an owl stared hooting, really close by in the trees, so we went outside to see if we could spot it with our torch.  It was not scared off by the light and just kept on hooting, its a really lovely sound.  We couldnt really see it except when it flew from one tree to another.  Lots of stars were out and I saw a shooting star.

Cercy-la-Tour lock

more subtle colours

A bit brighter

last one I promise!

We can drop our back awning, which is very useful with these low bridges
See the red dot, this is to show you the centre of the bridge as there is a footpath one side

We took ages to overtake these walkers

 Wednesday 11th September
Cercy-la-Tour to Anizy Lock
15km 7 locks

We woke up to rain, so we delayed our leaving until 10.30am when it had just about stopped.  The lock at Cercy is very pretty, the bollards, lock gates, lock cottage doors and window shutters are painted a matching lime green, and there were lots of flowers.  The lady lock keeper is also very friendly, and very careful with the sluices.  We have a lovely trip, but it was really cold today, only 13 degrees in the wheelhouse, last week it was 40 degrees in the wheelhouse.  We had to put the central heating on we were so cold.

We moored up in a really lovely quiet spot just after Anizy Lock in a very wide basin.  There was one other boat there but no one was onboard.

Thursday 12th September
Anizy Lock to Chatillon-en-Bazois
20km 8 locks

We were going to do a really short trip, as we had read that there was a very nice creperie 7km away at Lock Fleury but we asked a lock keeper about it and he said that it was closed so we decided to go all the way to Chatillon-en-Bavois which was 20kkm away, we arrived at 4pm.  It is a very slow twisty canal, with  lots of low narrow bridges and 8 locks.  All the locks were ready for us, and we tended to get one chap looking after two or three, most of them are very friendly.

We have a lovely mooring at Chatillon, between the 2 locks in the town.  We are going to stay here two nights and if the weather is good tomorrow then we are going out on our bikes. Update....weather wasn't that good so we we took it easy today!  Booked 9am slot with lock for tomorrow morning.

The canal is very quiet, we didnt see any other boats except one that was moored at Cercy and they are now here at Chatillon.

Our lovely mooring at Anizy

Twists and turns but actually not that bad, some of this part of the canal is quite wide

Not so easy with this bridge/lock being just after a corner,
they like to keep you on your toes
Our mooring at Chatillon en Bazois

The lock into Chatillon
I've booked our 9am slot with the nice young lady lock keeper

The lock we will use to leave Chatillon tomorrow
Nice Chateau in background, its only open July and August
